A personal side from our Lean Manager, Phil

My childhood was filled with mistakes, bad circumstances, and failures. My father was not a father and I had to figure who I was at an early age and own it. At sixteen, my grandfather told me that we are a product of our choices not a product of our circumstances. We all have the choice to be happy, to love, to be successful each day.

From that day on I chose to live every day with divine purpose. To have passion, purpose and love people until my last day here on earth. I refuse to let anyone around me feel the pain from my past. Failure is not an option, nor will it ever be, for I have forgiven those who have caused pain in my life and that is what has made me who I am today.

My past failures brought determination. Determination to be different from those in my past. Determination to be successful, and to be the greatest person I can be. This is the reason I train and lead teams at OMT-Veyhl – it’s about the people and helping them find their passion and purpose.

On June 2, 2009 the first of my two daughters was born. Within five minutes of her birth, I took her into a room by myself and vowed to Jaelynn Mae Garber on that day that I would never leave her and would protect her from harm until my last dying breath. I didn’t know how to be a father but I wouldn’t ever let failure be an option! My sole purpose in life at this point was to unconditionally love my daughter.

I decided to not only have passion purpose for my family, but also for my career. I wanted to love those around me daily and lead with love. Have you ever loved someone so much that you would give them anything just to see them smile one more time? That is the passion one must have in leadership each day.

Passion is what shapes your purpose in life and in business. When the idea for a venture or a cause starts to take shape, purpose is what ultimately helps define it. But most importantly, that same shared purpose is what brings together your career, friends, and family. That shared passion, that shared belief, is what motivates people, gives them the sense of belonging and excites them about accomplishing the same mission.

That is why the third P in this equation is as significant and the first two. Innovation comes from people working together, challenging each other and supporting each other every day. I believe there is no such thing as a self-made man. The success of our mission depends on the people we partner with.

Whether you are a growing business or an established one, if you don’t have a team or partners who share your vision, your goals, and most importantly your dreams, your business will not be able to reach its full potential. No matter how you look at it, no matter which field you are in, no matter how brilliant your ideas are, success is a team sport. You can imagine the most amazing products or services in the world, but it requires people to make your dream a reality. That’s where culture and leadership become vital.

I have one purpose in life and that is to lead all those around me to that feeling of value. When one feels valuable to their career, their family, and most importantly to society, they have already made it. They are successful, and that is one of the greatest feelings as a human. The feeling of value and love is what we all truly are searching for.

Do I consider myself a great leader? I cannot answer that, however, I will continue to lead all the people in my career and in my life with passion and purpose. I refuse to accept anything other than that. I will continue to dream, and I will dream big because dreams really can come true.

People will forget what you say, people will forget what you do, but people will never forget how you made them feel. It is vital as leaders that we don’t merely lead them, but that we lead with divine purpose. Some things in life will pass away or be forgotten, but the memories you share when doing things with passion and purpose will live on forever.
