cleaning powder coat

In recent times, cleaning work surfaces regularly is one of the most important steps we can take to stay healthy. This, however, might have you wondering exactly how to best clean some of your furniture, such as your powder coat finishes.

Powder coating is a dry, free-flowing, powder material that is applied to a surface and heated to harden into an even coating. It is typically applied to metal surfaces and is often preferred over conventional wet paint due to its efficiency, low environmental impact, and high durability.

Powder coat has a hard, thick finish that is tougher than standard paint and, therefore, less likely to be affected from typical impact that could cause chipping and scratching.

Cleaning and Disinfecting

Our OEMs themselves tackled the question of how to safely clean and disinfect these surfaces by conducting BIFMA and NSF tests on smooth and textured powder coat finishes and BIFMA tests on metallic powder coat finishes.

Both 24-hour spot tests and 30-minute spot tests were performed, with NSF49 testing using harsh chemicals and acids.

In conclusion, the tests found that for simple cleaning, general household cleaners are safe. However, certain recommendations were made to disinfect and kill viruses — a 10:1 bleach+ water dilute or a 70% Isopropyl alcohol+ water dilute. The 24-hour bleach test did leave a residue, but it was easily removed with soap and water. Do not use any abrasive or acidic cleaning solutions or harsh chemicals, including lye or rust remover.

While disinfecting your furniture, it is crucial that the cleaners are diluted to the instructions. While all the tests were successful, it is recommended that you test all cleaner on an inconspicuous spot to verify. For disinfecting or cleaning the top surface of the desk, be sure to check with your supplier for their recommendations.
