why metal?

Metal, particularly steel, can be found in an incredible amount of construction, furniture, vehicles, and everyday products.

Its natural properties – strong durability, fire resistance, and high sustainability, make it a great option against wood and other building materials.

Metal Can be Recycled

One key characteristic of metal that makes it sustainable is that it is highly recyclable. In fact, steel can be recycled an endless amount of times, never losing any of its inherent properties.

This becomes important as we look at the life cycles of our products and the long-term environmental impacts they may cause. The original lifespan of a product designed using steel is already longer than other materials due to its durability. However, even once the product’s life is over, through recycling, steel continues to be a permanently accessible material.

Instead of depleting a non-renewable resource, choosing to use metal creates a sustainable alternative that supports the recycling and reusing of products again and again.

According to the American Institute of Steel Construction, by weight, 81% of all steel products are recovered for recycling at the end of their life cycles.

This means that during redesigns and new construction, significantly less waste will end up in junk yards and landfills. The Steel Recycling Institute states that more steel is recycled each year than aluminum, paper, glass and plastic combined.

In addition to simply creating less waste, recycling old steel products to create new steel uses significantly less energy than creating the same product from raw material – 74% to be exact according to Be Recycled. They also list that “for every ton of steel recycled, 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal, and 120 pounds of limestone are conserved.”

OMT-Veyhl’s Steel Usage

At OMT-Veyhl, we use steel tubing, steel flat sheet, as well as some stainless steel to manufacture our high-quality metal table legs, adjustable-height table bases and other mission-critical parts.

In addition to building with sustainable material, we also recycle our scrap to a local recycler.

We hold ourselves to the highest of standards and constantly strive to make ourselves a worthy partner, not only in our operational processes and end products, but in all the decisions we make along the way. Reducing our carbon footprint and implementing corporate sustainability practices are key business practices at OMT-Veyhl.
